Maokwo exist to amplify the stories of migrants, refugees and asylum seekers through:
- Producing and curating exhibits
- Creating and Selling Art and Jewellery
- Commissions for training and workshops
- Develop projects in response to needs and experiences of the artists and communities we work with; and provide opportunities for artists from these backgrounds to explore and develop their creativity in an authentic way that is true to their cultures.
Maokwo rose to prominence while participating in Coventry city of culture celebrations. Maokwo’s founder, Laura Nyahuye, designed the baton for the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham which travelled 90,000 miles touring the Commonwealth countries ahead of the games’ start in July 2022. The baton carried a special note from the Queen, addressing the nations, which was revealed when it arrived back in England. You can find out more here.
“The time spent with Stephen was really valuable and timely for our organisation.”
